Angela Basset, Kathie Bates, Jessica Lange, Gabourey Sidibe and Emma Roberts broke records for the FX Network, with her feature in the third installment of American Horror Story:Coven. The storyline is based on Voodoo, and centered around real events in New Orleans. The show pulled in the highest ratings, with 505 million viewers for the premiere episode, making it the most watched program in FX history.
Angela Basset says, "[My character is] based on a real-life woman, Marie Laveau, who lived in the 1800s. She was a free woman of color, she had a great deal of influence because she was a [voodoo] priestess," says Bassett. "She helped people out, she didn't practice black magic or white magic, she practiced 'gris-gris,' which is gray-gray. If you needed some help or someone had put something on you and you wanted it off you, you'd go to her."
On taking part in real voodoo ritual: "I think the idea of it initially [scared me], because you're just wondering, 'Now, I don't wanna call up nothin' unbeknownst to myself,'" she laughs.
"But we actually some had some voodoo priests and priestesses, young, old, just all types of people who were on the set do the actual ceremony for us. … We had to get the elements right. We were doing a scene that involved fertility so the colors would be different, just little things that people who know would know. I just tried to not fall into the fire pit."
